According to a recent survey by a leading home insurance provider, almost a third of homeowners would either attempt to tackle or confront a burglar if they came across an intruder on their property. The study was carried out by AA Home Insurance and questioned 13,000 people as part of their poll. While a third of respondents admitted they would attempt to tackle a burglar in their home, another third of those who took part in the study said they would try to scare the intruder off by screaming or shouting to attract attention. However 73 out of the 13,000 homeowners said they would even go a step further and attempt to shoot the burglar to protect their family. 40% of those who took part in the study said they would take a less direct approach to an intruder in their home by hiding in a safe place and calling the police. This course of action has been recommended as the best way to deal with such a situation as you avoid putting yourself or any other occupants of the house in danger. The poll also highlighted the gender divide between the reaction of men and women to burglars as females were found to be less likely to confront a person in their home with 6.1% saying they would tackle a burglar compared to 27.7% of men.
