According to a recent survey, domestic pets cause an estimated £3.3 billion worth of damage to homes every year, which works out as £690 per household. However all major home insurance providers are failing to offer any kind of cover for this type of damage, which has led a leading price comparison website to launch a petition.
Dogs are responsible for the majority of domestic destruction reported by pet owners, causing 55% of all damage caused by pets, followed closely by cats who cause 29% of damage, and even goldfish feature on the list, being responsible for 2% of damage in the home, usually related to water spillage and damp.
The uninsurable damage caused by pets could be responsible for cases animal abandonment as home owners decide to get rid of their pets because of the problems caused in the home, it has been suggested.
Now, insurance price comparison website, Confused.com, has stepped in to launch a petition which calls for all major insurance companies to offer cover for damage caused to homes by pets, in the hope that this will lead to a reduction in animal abandonment.
The insurance price comparison website believes their online petition will offer home and pet owners the opportunity to tell major insurance groups what they want from a home insurance policy, which will lead to better levels of cover for pet owners.
