Ms Cosgrove happened to come across the cheque while she was searching through her bedside table drawer looking for a photograph of her ex-husband. The elderly lady says she’d been through that drawer over a thousand times and had never clapped eyes on the unopened envelope before. The claim was made in 1978 after an incident which happened under the Brooklyn Bridge. A tarp which had filled up with rainwater fell 200 feet onto the car causing damage to the vehicle. The insurance company paid up, issuing a cheque for $17,500 which was never cashed. As to why she hadn’t noticed the unopened envelope containing the cheque before, Ms Cosgrove says she is at a loss to explain why she hadn’t come across it previously. However it is not yet clear whether or not Ms Cosgrove will be able to cash-in the cheque as the company which the insurance policy was with has since gone bust and is no longer in business.
